Sri Maha Mariamman Temple
History & Establishment

We take great pride in the fact that the Annai Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, which is situated at Taman Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Selangor, is a powerful temple with more than 100 years of history. Located between Kuala Lumpur and Klang, Taman Glenmarie has many special features.

The Annai Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, which was then a small temple, began to grow after 1940. The main reason for this growth was the religious involvement of the local people and religious festivals along with festival-related entertainment, games, and street fairs.

Initially, the plantations were in the hands of the British, and R.W. Stewart managed the temples. He made substantial financial contributions to temple developments and festivals.

After 1946, the temple underwent rapid development. At the time, people were worshipping idols on printed images.

In 1948, the people on the plantation decided to refurbish the temple. As a result, three sculptors were invited from Tamil Nadu to aid the temple expansion work.

After that, the temple opening ceremony was held, followed by religious ceremonies and ubayas. People from neighbouring estates also took part in the festivities and offered prayers.

In the early 1960s, Mr. Philip Lai was appointed as the Plantation manager. During his administration, the temple was further developed.

As the temple and people started progressing, so did hardships. In 1962, the country’s major problem was plantation fragmentation, whereby many estates were sold causing many to suffer. Glenmarie Estate too faced the same fate, however, the people of the estate were saved By Ambal’s Grace.

In 1984 people moved into their own houses in Taman Glenmarie under the labor housing scheme, and the temple continued to function at the old location.

Efforts were constantly being made to construct a temple in the new residential area. As a result of the continuous effort, today we see the majestic Sri Maha Mariamman Temple at a strategic location. This reflects the hard work of the temple administration.

It is admirable to see the release of this historical recollection on the occasion of Maha Kumbhabhishekam on the 23rd of March 2008.  Sincere thanks to the stewards of this historical collection.
